Afghan Businesses Suffer $1mn In Losses Due to Customs Duty Hike

04 Oct 2018 Wadsam Afghanistan Business News

Afghan businessmen have suffered USD 1 million in losses due to a recent rise in customs duty by the Afghan government, the Afghan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) reported on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference, ACCI deputy head Khan Jan Alokozay said the Ministry of Finance has hiked the duty on a 40 feet container up to 450,000 Afghanistan compared to 150,000 Afghanis just a month ago.

He called on the government to combat corruption at ports, municipalities and custom offices instead of raising taxes and added that any duty hike should be debated by a commission before its implementation.

Meanwhile, the business community has warned of closing down their businesses if the government does not address the duty hike issue.
