Fourteen people have been killed after Afghan forces tried to arrest a strongman in northern Sar-i-Pul province, an official said Wednesday.

The clash started on Tuesday evening in Dahana village of Balkhab district.

Six Afghan forces and eight individuals loyal to Mahdi Mujahid, a former mujhaideen commander, were killed in the clash, said Zabihullah Amani, a spokesman for provincial governor. He said that the clash was still ongoing.

Another 12 men loyal to the Mujahid were injured, he said.

The violence began after Afghan forces tried to arrest Mujahid allegedly for murder, breaking laws and bullying, Amani said.

He said that Mujahid had also barred parliamentary candidates to campaign.
