Afghanistan’s teenage off-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman has grabbed the headlines for the wrong reasons after he reportedly listed a fake age. The mystery spinner had taken the cricketing fraternity by storm during the IPL 2018 where he represented the Kings XI Punjab. However, the recent development regarding his fake age has landed him in some trouble. He has had to take a lot of flak on social media for reportedly faking his age.

As per Mujeeb’s profile on ESPNcricinfo, he was born on 28th March 2001 and currently is only 17-year-old. However, according to a recent interview with former Pakistan cricketer Rashid Latif, who coached Afghanistan in 2010, the authenticity of this piece of information is contested. In an exclusive interview with Dawn, Latif said he had spotted Mujeeb at a senior team trial in his early days as the coach of Afghanistan.

Spotted Mujeeb, Shahidi, Zazai in a camp: Latif

“I was approached by Hamid Shinwari, the then CEO of the board, and I travelled to Afghanistan to find a good bunch of players during a short camp in Kabul. Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Afsar Zazai, Amir Hamza and a few others were potentially good cricketers,” Latif was quoted as saying.

“Gulbadin Naib, a junior level bodybuilder, too caught my attention but then he left the scene. Still, I remembered his name because it reminded me of the Afghan leader Gulbadin Hikmatyar. I summoned Gulbadin to the following camp in Jalalabad,” he added.

As this interview began to make the rounds on social media, Mujeeb drew flak from the cricket fraternity as well as fans. According to claims, he is not the only Afghan cricketer who has falsified about his age. Leg-spinning sensation Rashid Khan, whose current age is listed at 20, reportedly has a similar story about faking his age. However, there are no confirmations at the moment and it is unclear whether authorities will look into this matter more closely.
