'Preliminary work on TAPI in Afghanistan nears completion'

Preliminary work on the Afghan section of $10 billion natural gas pipeline involving also Turkmenistan, Pakistan and India is close to completion, an official said Monday.

Abdul Rahman Mujahid, director of TAPI project in Afghanistan, said this at launch of a three-day exhibition in Kabul to encourage domestic companies involve in the project.

“Preliminary work on TAPI is 95 percent complete. Implementation phase will likely begin by the end of this year or at the beginning of next year,” Mujahid said.

The $9.6 billion pipeline would carry 33 billion cubic metres of gas a year. Preliminary work, involving demining, environmental assessment, surveys and land acquisition on the Afghan section of the pipeline began earlier this year.

Khan Jan Alokozay, deputy chairman of Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce, said that domestic resources should be used in implementation of the project.

“Provision of services, construction and transporting on the project should all be carried out by the Afghans themselves,” Alokozay said at the event.
