The United States has exempted Chabahar Port development and import of petroleum by Afghanistan from the new sanctions imposed on Iran.

a State Department spokesman has told Reuters that the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has granted an exception to certain U.S. sanctions that will allow the India-led development of a port in Iran as part of a new transportation corridor designed to boost Afghanistan’s economy.

In addition, Afghanistan will be allowed to continue importing Iranian petroleum products, the spokesman said.

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Saturday met with the Assistance U.S. Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Alice Wells and discussed the U.S. sanctions on Chabahar port.

The Office of the President, ARG Palace, in a statement said the Afghan government had earlier discussed the issue of U.S. sanctions on Iran and its effects on Chabahar.

The statement by ARG Palace added that the results of the recent talks over Chabahar port would be shared with the people in the near future, emphasizing that the outcome of the talks would have a good economic impact for Afghanistan.
