'Afghan delegation invites Pakistanis to invest in mining sector'

A delegation of Afghanistan Industries, Mines and Investment High Council has invited Pakistani companies to invest in Afghanistan mining sector by creating joint ventures, Pakistani authorities said Thursday.

The delegation, led by its CEO Mohammad Shabir Bashiry, requested this in a meeting with local business community in Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

He said that the private sector of Afghanistan was interested to engage Pakistani counterparts in mining sector that has great potential for growth and urged that Pakistani investors should set up joint ventures for promoting mechanized mining in the country, ICCI said.

He said that Afghanistan was still an untapped market for Pakistani entrepreneurs and they should take full benefit of emerging business opportunities in Afghanistan.

An official from Afghanistan embassy in Islamabad also supported the call for Pakistani investment in Afghan mining sector.

Samina Wadeer, the commercial attache of Afghan embassy, said that by investing in Afghanistan, Pakistani private sector could get easy access to Central Asian markets.

She said Afghanistan was an open market and investors of many countries were taking keen interest in Afghan market, adding her country wanted to give priority to Pakistani investors for joint ventures and investment in mining and other sectors.

Meanwhile, ICCI officials assured that it would cooperate with Afghanistan Industries, Mines and Investment High Council to facilitate joint ventures and investment in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan is estimated to have mineral wealth worth one to three trillion dollars

Asked about recent report, Abdul Qadir Mutfi, a spokesman for the Afghan ministry of mines and petroleum, told 1TV that there was no plan for Pakistani investment in the Afghan mining sector.

He said that Pakistanis lack capability to invest in the sector.
