US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad, arrived in Chinese capital Beijing on Monday.

Leading an interagency delegation, Khalilzad left his country last Tuesday on tour to four countries including India, China, Afghanistan and Pakistan with an aim to facilitate an intra-Afghan political settlement.

He visited India where he met with India’s Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj, where they discussed their perspectives on peace and reconciliation efforts in Afghanistan. After visiting India, Khalilzad said that unexpected flight delays prevented him from getting to Kabul on Saturday.

Before arriving in Beijing, the envoy met with Afghan National Security Adviser Hamdullah Mohib and Afghan Ambassador to Pakistan Atif Mashal as they transited Dubai. Mohib was en route from China to Saudi Arabia to discuss peace talks and bilateral cooperation with Saudi officials. He met also with UAE national security adviser, discussing Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process and counter-terrorism.

Khalilzad said that he was in Bejing to meet Chinese officials on efforts to facilitate peace in Afghanistan.

“China has an important role in the process and I look forward to exploring how we work together,” Khalilzad said.
