NATO says its commitment to Afghanistan is 'unwavering'

A top NATO official on Tuesday said that the alliance's commitment to Afghanistan was "unwavering".

“Our commitment to Afghanistan is unwavering,” said Sir Stuart Peach, chairman of NATO’s Military Committee said that addressing a meeting in Brussels that was attended by the alliance’s chiefs of defense.

“The security situation remains challenging. Nevertheless, the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces are working very hard to secure their country and deny a safe haven to terrorists,” Peach said.

He said that the chiefs of defense would receive briefings from the Deputy Commander Resolute Support, Lieutenant General Salvatore Camporeale, on behalf of General Scott Miller, and NATO Senior Civilian Representative, Ambassador Cornelius Zimmermann on the current political military situation and discuss NATO’s future engagement in Afghanistan.

He said the chiefs of defense had a dedicated session on Pakistan with Pakistan’s General Mahmood Hayat.

“We will receive a briefing from him on his perspective of the regional security situation and discuss the potential future cooperation,” he said.

NATO and its coalition partners have around 16,000 troops in Afghanistan.

Their main purpose is to train and advise Afghan army and police units as well as to provide a certain number of combat enabling services, including air support and intelligence.
