Blasts target major gathering in Afghanistan's Kabul

07 Mar 2019 TRT World

"We have reports of explosions in the western part of Kabul. Investigations have been launched," said Nasrat Rahimi, a spokesman at the interior ministry.

Explosions rocked Afghanistan's capital of Kabul on Thursday, two officials said, but it was not clear if bombs had gone off or if rockets had been fired into the city, and there was no immediate word on any casualties or damage.

"We have reports of explosions in the western part of Kabul. Investigations have been launched," said Nasrat Rahimi, a spokesman at the interior ministry.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

A senior interior ministry official said the attackers could have targeted a large gathering of Shias attending a commemoration on the anniversary of a leader's death.

The first explosion abruptly ended the event and sent attendees fleeing, including leading government officials and politicians.

"Stay calm, the area of the blast is far from us," said former lower house speaker Mohammad Younus Qanooni during a live broadcast of the event.

But moments after the announcement, another explosion could be heard that sent people running for the exit.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
