An Afghan official and five soldiers have been killed in separate airstrikes carried out by foreign forces in southern Afghanistan, officials said Wednesday.

Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry in a statement said that the coalition struck a checkpoint during a joint operation with Afghan special forces in Uruzgan capital Trinkot last night, as a result of which five Afghan soldiers were killed while 10 others were injured.

The statement said that the strike happened due to misunderstanding, but added that a team is investigating the incident.

Provincial council’s deputy, Mohammad Karim Karimi, said that there were 17 Afghan soldiers in the targeted facility during the raid.

Separately, an Afghan official was killed in an airstrike by foreign forces in Marjah district of southern Helmand province.

Abdullah Khan, education head of Marjah district, was killed along with his brother, said Dawood Shah Safari, the provincial education director.
