Governments 250-Member List to Travel to Qatar; Negotiation or Picnic?

17 Apr 2019 Middle East Press

Eventually, after a while, the Afghan government provided and published the 250 delegates list to attend the Afghan Peace Talks with the Taliban in Qatar.

According to officials in the Presidential Palace, the list includes all segments of the society, including politics, youths, women, civil society and other strata.

The ARG has published this list after days of deliberations.

The Qatar Peace Negotiation is followed by Moscow Summit, in which parties representatives, political figures and women talked with Armed Taliban on Feb 5-6.

At previous meeting, it was agreed that similar meetings will continue to strengthen the peace process, and according to it, the list of next participants must be shared with representatives of the Taliban, and after approval, they can take part in Qatar Peace Negotiations.

The strange point is that, a 250-delegate list, including 52 women is being prepared, while it is unclear that with the presence of 250 delegates, what will be the achievement?

If all 250 people speak as Afghan delegates, will there be enough time? And will all of them be able clarify their points of views?

At the same time, how many hotels must be reserved for these 250 delegates? And how they get positioned? And how and from where the expense will be paid?

The recent talks are for Afghanistan’s peace, and the quality should not be affected by the quantity that is clearly implemented in the Govts list; while the name of the ex-president Hamid Karzi, who was one of the Moscow Summit holders, is not seen on the list.

On the other hand, a number of political leaders, including Atah Mohammad Noor, chief executive of Jameit-e-Islami and Rahmatullah Nabil, questioned the list and said it is favored by the government.

One day after the release of the list, the armed Taliban also responded.

The group today (Wednesday, April 17) said in a newsletter that the Qatar Summit is a regular one in a Gulf state, not a wedding or a party in Kabul hotels.

According to the newsletter, “it must be clarified that the conference guarantors have declared in direct talks and written words that no one represent the Kabul Administration; such Moscow Summit, if anyone from the Kabul Administration represent the Summit, he will take part personally and share his own views. No one can represent Kabul Administration.”

The newsletter adds; “the list organizers in Kabul must know that it is a regular and planed conference in a Gulf state, not a wedding or a party in Kabul hotels.”

The newsletter, released on the Twitter account of Zabihullah Mujahid, an armed Taliban spokesman, declare that arrangement of such lists shows that Kabul Administration is afraid of such meetings and progress in peace talks, and work for its destruction.

The government has not responded to these remarks by the armed Taliban.

It is worth mentioning that the Qatar meeting between governments 250-member and the Taliban 25-delegates is scheduled for April 19-21.

At the end, it should be said: “the quantity is not important but the quality is.”
